Sri Lanka is a year-round holiday destination for all types of travelers, offering everything from the chilly hilltops to sunny beaches. However, visiting during the dry season is something special altogether. The dry season for the West and South Coast spans from December to March, and for the East Coast from May to September. Planning ahead for your trip can ensure that you have the most memorable time - here’s what you need to know!

You will know it’s the dry season once you see sunny skies, calm skies and a beautiful climate. It’s the perfect time to vacation around the coasts and indulge in water sports and even wildlife safaris. Some of Sri Lanka’s top destinations during this time (July onwards) include;

  • Arugam Bay; This is known as the surfer’s paradise! The beautiful beaches and vibrant town is the perfect holiday spot for friends and family alike!
  • Yala; If you are a wildlife enthusiast, there is no better place to be other than the Yala National Park where you can spot leopards, elephants and more!
  • Trincomalee; Some of the bluest beaches in the country are in Trincomalee; with a rich history and a whole island to snorkel - you can be sure to have an adventure in Trincomalee alone!
  • Sigiriya; The ancient rock fortress is an international favorite! Sigiriya is a part of the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka and is a great place to start your journey if you are a history enthusiast. Once you finish up in Sigiriya, you can also visit Dambulla and Polonnaruwa.

While there are many more spots to adventure through, you will have the best time if you are prepared.

  1. Book In Advance; The dry season is also peak tourist time, so if you are booking a trip - make sure you book in advance so you can secure the best options for accommodation and activities!
  2. Stay Hydrated; The heat has a reputation for being quite intense sometimes, make sure you are constantly drinking water and keeping yourself hydrated so you can enjoy Sri Lanka to the fullest.
  3. Use Local Transport; If you are visiting Sri Lanka for the first time, using the tuk-tuks, trains and buses is a fun and affordable way to get around! You also get an unmatched view from each mode of transport.
  4. Pack Light; Breathable fabrics will be your best friend for your trip to Sri Lanka! Invest in some good cotton and/or linen clothing for your trip. It is unlikely that you will need thicker clothing but shorts and t-shirts are your best bet.
  5.  Respect Local Customs; When visiting religious and heritage sites of Sri Lanka, dress modestly and be mindful of the local customs and traditions.

Sri Lanka during the dry season is the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation - whatever kind of vacation you are looking for, you can find all over Sri Lanka! Pack your bags, hop on a flight and head on over. If you need anything, the locals are always happy to help so don’t worry - you will have an unforgettable trip.
