- by Neville Epa
Making candles is a craft in itself, and it is even more of a labor of love with Apothecary & Co. When it comes to hand-poured candles, each candle is made with the highest attention to detail. The meticulous process begins with looking for new and exciting fragrances found in the finest of natural ingredients from the heart of Sri Lanka. Apothecary & Co. stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of Sri Lanka, capturing the essence of the island in their unique hand-poured candles.
Sri Lanka has an abundance of diverse landscapes and aromatic flora and fauna, once you have experienced the scents of Sri Lanka - you will never forget it.
One of the most important senses is scent - it can evoke the most vivid of memories, and the strongest of emotions. This is also what makes a hand-poured candle a thoughtful, meaningful gift. Each candle tells a story of its own, and can be a point of connection for a beautiful memory. Apothecary & Co has a range of mindfully curated fragrances that are inspired by Sri Lanka, here are two of our favorites;
The Amber candle is a blend of sweet patchouli, bergamot and resin, creating a fresh and uplifting sensory experience.
- Patchouli is native to various tropical regions in Asia including Sri Lanka and thrives in the warmth, it is mostly used in traditional rituals as well as a natural insect repellent. It has a very earthy, musky aroma.
- Bergamot is usually associated with the Mediterranean but Sri Lanka has a long history of trade in that category; the citrusy and floral aroma is the perfect compliment for other tropical aromas around Sri Lanka. It is also reminiscent of the lush landscapes that are abundant with fruit trees.
- Resin is a naturally occurring ingredient that is found in Sri Lanka, it has been used for years in traditional medicine as well as incense. It has a warm, slightly sweet scent that is often associated with the timeless nature of Sri Lanka’s forests spiritual heritage.
The Dulcet candle is a blend of white tea, smoked tobacco, tonka and saffron creating an earthy and evocative scent profile.
- White Tea is a premium variety of tea that is less processed than other types which helps it retain its flavor. The tea industry is a prominent part of Sri Lanka; the fresh and delicate aroma of White Tea captures the purest essence of the tea plantations of Sri Lanka.
- Smoked Tobacco specifically is not associated with Sri Lanka but the smoky scent is reminiscent of the aroma of smoke that occurs during cultural practices. This ingredient helps to add a layer of complexity and richness to the final aroma.
- Tonka is known for its warm, sweet and slightly spicy aroma - similar to the variety of flora in Sri Lanka. This is a complimenting, rich and comforting scent for the local fragrances; coming together to reflect the diverse botanical heritage.
- Saffron is one of the most valued ingredients in South Asia; used in medicine and cuisine, the luxurious aroma adds an element of opulence and is a significant part of the spice trade.
