International Women’s Day Spotlight: Sonali Ferdinands

Sonali Ferdinands is a 25-year-old fashion designer who bridges artistry, commerce, tradition, and modernity. A graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and the Academy of Design, Sonali’s journey is one of passion and purpose.

From balancing creative integrity with commercial success to championing the artistry of Sri Lankan heritage, Sonali’s story is one of the power of vision. As she navigates the ever-evolving world of fashion, she remains committed to carving her path. 

Here’s what she had to say about the challenges, inspirations, and defining moments that have shaped her career. 

1. What’s your biggest challenge as a woman in your industry?

Balancing creativity with commercial success. As someone deeply passionate about design, I constantly navigate the fine line between staying true to my artistic vision and meeting market demands. There’s always pressure to adapt to trends, but I believe luxury and fashion should be about setting trends, not just following them

 2. Have you had a mentor or role model who shaped your journey, if so, who?

I’ve been fortunate to work with some incredible female bosses over the past few years while balancing my studies. Their openness to share their skills and insights has been invaluable, proving that women supporting women is one of the most powerful aspects of this industry.

3. What advice would you give young women looking to start their own business?

Develop your business idea and just start, there’s never going to be a perfect time.

4. Can you share a moment when you felt truly empowered in your work? 

One of the most empowering moments in my work is when I get to collaborate with artisans and different artists to create something truly meaningful. There’s something incredibly special about working with talented creators who pour their heart and heritage into their craft. Whether it’s curating a collection, developing a campaign, or bringing a vision to life, seeing the fusion of tradition and contemporary design come together is always inspiring.
