The Artistic Journey of Thisath Thoradeniya
Born in 1975, Thisath Thoradeniya comes from the historical Sri Lankan city of Kandy. He received his initial training at the Vibhavi Academy of Fine Arts. His art practice includes painting, sculpture, installation, and more specifically electro-mechanical, kinetic sculpture- installations. His works, well informed by the politics of his country, subtly talks about aspirations, tensions and calamities of life, incorporating a realism depicted with attention to detail, a minimalism which brings a sombre neatness and an abstraction that is conceptually well thought.
He has participated in number of international art residencies and workshops including in Bangladesh, Mauritius and Colombia. His work has been exhibited in the Colombo Art Biennale in 2014 and in the Asian Art Biennale 2008 in Dhaka, Bangladesh in which he received an Honourable Mention Award.
Thoradeniya is a member of the Board of Directors at Theertha International Artists’ Collective, Sri Lanka.
At present, he lives and works in Kandy and Colombo, Sri Lanka.
