Diyabubula: A Journey Through Art, Nature & Craftsmanship

  • by Neville Epa

Created by renowned Sri Lankan artist, Laki Senanayake - Diyabubula is a sanctuary of art, nature and craftsmanship. The word ‘ Diyabubula’ means ‘bubbling fountain’ and symbolises the power of the earth as well as the creativity that the property boasts.

Laki Senanayake's vision for Diyabubula was to craft a space that connects art with the natural world. A true embodiment of his creativity. Diyabubula acted as a personal retreat for the artist, which also doubled as an open-air art gallery where nature itself became part of the exhibit.

Diyabubula reflects Laki Senanayake’s work in sculpture, architecture, and design. Every corner of the property has a story that shares his love for creativity and the natural environment.

The sculptures which are made from sustainable materials are scattered around the property and are inspired by the wildlife in the area. Combined with his deep love for his environment, they showcase the beauty of Sri Lankan craftsmanship and the island’s beautiful landscapes which are a treat for visitors as well.

There are five villas within the retreat which provide an immersive experience of being surrounded by jungle life, with every detail crafted to reflect harmony between modern comfort and natural beauty which is integral to the philosophy of Diyabubula. Each villa is designed with breathtaking views of the surrounding jungle and spring. Art enthusiasts and creative minds are often drawn to the retreat for its aesthetic appeal and the sense of peace and inspiration it provides.

What makes the property so special aside from it being the oasis that it is, is the ability it has to blend eco-conscious architecture with authentic craftsmanship seamlessly. Many local artisans worked together and played a vital role in bringing Diyabubula together - using traditional methods to build the structures and art pieces to reflect Sri Lanka’s unique heritage. Visitors can also explore the open-air gallery, where hand-sculpted artworks and batiks are displayed.

Diyabubula is committed to sustainability - it’s deeply evident in the design and day-to-day operations where water plays a central part both physically and symbolically. The surroundings of the property overflow with wildlife from exotic birds, butterflies, and a variety of flora serving as a haven and sanctuary for all of them alike.

Beyond its beauty and artistic influence, Diyabubula supports sustainable livelihoods while celebrating Sri Lanka’s craftsmanship. Visitors can explore and purchase handcrafted items, from intricate batik fabrics to elegant brass jewellery, each representing a unique fusion of tradition and contemporary design.

Diyabubula is not just for artists—it’s a destination for eco-conscious travellers seeking a mindful escape. This is the perfect retreat if you’re looking to connect with Sri Lankan artistry, and an immersive experience of art, architecture and nature. Diyabubula goes beyond relaxation, encouraging visitors to engage with the environment in a meaningful way while indulging in the beauty of the arts.

It is an invitation to experience Sri Lanka’s beauty, creativity, and Laki Senanayake’s vision—an artistic oasis that nurtures both the environment and the soul.
