A Chat With Supermom & Businesswoman Dr. Iroshini Chua

  • by Neville Epa

Mother’s Day is drawing near and it’s time to shine light on the powerful, strong women in our lives and our society. Dr. Iroshini Chua is a woman of many talents; a family physician, co-founder of an award skincare brand and a jewellery designer for ‘Iroshini’  - she is also a mom of two. We spoke to Dr. Iroshini Chua earlier this week about all things motherhood and jewellery - check out what she had to say.

What is your favorite part about being a mom?

The love that fills my heart is unconditional.

So far, what has been one of the most significant lessons motherhood has taught you?

The value of reasoning with the children from a young age, having open conversations and not being afraid to apologize if you make a mistake makes for a stronger relationship as the children grow up.

Has motherhood influenced your designs/creative process along the way when it comes to designing your jewellery?

Yes. I take into consideration timeless pieces that can be worn for generations. I am a fan of mileage for jewellery pieces, e.g. designing rings that can be converted to broches or pendants.

As you've grown up in the jewellery space with your parents, what is one piece you have that you would give to your children later on?

My mother entrusted me to take care of a special emerald pendant that she said was for my daughter Aiyana. I will be handing that to her when she in turn, can take it for the next generation.

How did you find the harmony of working in the luxury jewellery industry and being a mother at the same time?

I have involved my daughter in the design process as she has a very keen eye. It's a fantastic way to bond.

As a successful businesswoman & devoted mom, what are three core values you instill in your children for work/life?

Love what you do, then you will never work a day in your life. Be honest and kind. If you are successful, you will be in a position to help those who need you.

Gift-giving is a huge part of Mother's Day, what advice would you have for someone looking for a piece of jewellery for their mom?

Start with choosing a stone or stones in a colour that your mother would like and be involved in the entire design process. These pieces will be heirlooms so make sure you are a part of the story.

What is one piece of advice you would have for moms-to-be or new moms?

It's about quantity, not just quality of time. Spend as much time as possible with the kids in their formative years.
