3 Things You NEED To Do When Visiting The South Coast of Sri Lanka
- by Neville Epa
As we approach the end of the year, it’s the perfect time to start planning for your December holidays. If you are looking for the perfect tropical vacation, you’re in luck because Sri Lanka’s south doast is in full swing with the season starting in December. The towns are buzzing, the celebrations are starting and the best part is… the beaches are in their prime condition! There is no shortage of activities to do and places to visit while you are on the south coast but here are 3 things you absolutely need to do!
Stay at The Six
A newly opened property on the south coast, bordering the surfing hubspot, Weligama. No two villas are the same. There are six identities, six individual curations inspired by six of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Each villa overlooks the Indian Ocean and hosts 4 spacious bedrooms which include ensuite bathrooms, living areas, dining area and a sauna along with a private butler to attend to every need. It’s one of the best places to stay whether you’re with your family or a small group of friends, indulge in the south coast in absolute luxury.
Visit The Classic Sights
The coast is overflowing with some classic sights to see, both historical and commercial. These include the Galle Fort (you can walk around the whole fort in about an hour but ideally, you should spend some time taking in the views and even indulging in some shopping, and some delicious food from the restaurants in the area), Coconut Tree Hill (located in Mirissa, and is best on a sunny day and the place to be if you’re looking to snap some Insta-worthy photos), Jungle Beach (one of the most beautiful spots in Unawatuna - it’s a small hike down, with small waves but it’s ideal for a relaxing swim) and so much more.
Eat, Drink and Enjoy
Food is at the heart of this island, and the South Coast has a thriving food scene with some of the best chefs in the cafes, restaurants and bars. Some of our favorites include Hotel De Uncles (Ahangama), Wijaya Beach (Unawatuna), Pedlar’s Inn Cafe and Restaurant (Galle), Dots Bay House (Hiriketiya), Maru Poke (Weligama), Salty Swamis (Hikkaduwa), Smoke & Bitters (Hiriketiya), Big Mighty (Ahangama), Black Honey (Ahangama), Doctor’s House (Matara), MOND (Hiriketiya), Ropewalk (Galle) and so on. There is so much to explore in and around the coast. It’s best to either pick a few and spend the day exploring them or choose some places you’re really intrigued by and visit those. You can get around with a car, or tuk or even a rented bike! It’s a beautiful and scenic drive - if you’re in a car, make sure you keep the windows open!
The variety is endless on the coast. Start planning now and booking by end October to make sure you have the best December vacation along Sri Lanka’s south coast.
